After a 3-hour closed-door session, the Sofia city court ordered on Tuesday that brothers Krasimir and Nikolai Marinov remain in police custody on charges that included conspiracy to commit murder.

The Marinov brothers, believed to be affiliated with defunct strong-arm grouping SIK, were arrested during a police operation triggered by last week\’s assassination of banker Emil Kyulev.

The prosecution authorities denied any connection between Kyulev\’s killing and the arrest of the notorious brothers.

Together with another 3 men, the Marinov brothers are charged with plotting the murder of general Lyuben Gotsev, a former officer from the communist-era security police, of businessman Ivan Todorov and of Nikola Damyanov, a former top executive of foreign trade company Chimimport and an adviser to Varna-based economic group TIM.

The prosecutors will also try to prove that the defendants are guilty of master-minding an armed criminal group and of illegal possession of firearms, munitions and explosives.

The charges of the prosecutors will unravel in court, said the lawyer of Nikolai Marinov.

The remand in custody will be appealed next Tuesday. The prosecution has not indicated when it plans to present the indictment.

According to unofficial sources, the case of the prosecution hinges on the testimony of a witness whose identity has been suppressed.

Sources from the prosecution said the motives for the plotted murders have not been determined yet.(Dnevnik)
