Sofia Elections: 1 November 2005, Tuesday.

Bulgaria\’s prime minister has made a sharply critical statement about Boyko Borissov, the leader in the race for Sofia mayor.

According to Sergey Stanishev, Borissov\’s crime-fight image helped him take the lead, especially after the recent killing of mogul Emil Kyulev.

The Premier explained that Borissov\’s previous job as chief secretary of the Interior has made people associate his with security.

But actually many of the latest mafia-like murders happened during Borissov\’s mandate, Stanishev was cited as saying Tuesday.

His Socialist Party had nominated Tatyana Doncheva for the mayor post in Sofia. The leftist lady made it to a run-off that will take place next weekend, but her result of 23% was overshadowed by Borissov\’s almost 39%.

The two will clash again on November 5.
