Bulgaria\’s Socialist Party announced its plans to urge the Foreifn Ministrry to prepare a report on the investigation of UN\’s Independent Inquiry Committee on the Oil-for-Food Investigation.
BSP spokesman Angel Naydenov explained that the party will ask the Foreign Ministry to undertake all necessary measures and collect the needed evidence that would answer the question why are the socialists mentioned in the report.
In Naydenov\’s words BSP has no answer to the question why is the party involved in that scandal. He underlined that BSP is not mentioned in the body of the UN report, but in the appendix, analyzing the execution of the Oil-for-Food programme.
Bulgaria\’s Prime Minister and BSP leader Sergey Stanishev also commented the scandal and said that there were differences between the appendixes of the report and the facts, written in it, which is his words is "a worrying fact."
The prime minister explained that BSP is willing to find the truth once and for good and to clear its name, as neither the party, nor its management has participated in such deals.
The official website of the IIC contains the full report including annexed tables, which includes several Bulgarian companies and political organizations, including the Socialist Party.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan appointed April 2004, the IIC as an independent, high-level inquiry to investigate the administration and management of the Oil-for-Food Programme in Iraq.
The Oil-for-Food Program was established by the UN in 1996 and terminated in the end of 2003. It was aiming at allowing Iraq to sell oil on the world market in exchange for food, medicine, and other humanitarian needs for Iraqi citizens without letting the country to rebuild its military.
